THE BACKLOT

THE BACKLOT BAR is one of Calgary’s oldest gay owned and operated bars. It’s a very “West Hollywood” style bar. We’re not fancy but we’re full of history, acceptance, and a lot of laughs. A small two-story bar with patio in the back and fireplace in the front. Everyone is welcome – gay, lesbian, straight, any letter or combination of letters in the sexual orientation alphabet. We also have a philosophy around trying to make sure everyone in the community can come out and have fun – especially in these tough economic times. So, we always have reasonable drink prices. Tucked away in Victoria Park, Civic Tavern is a great place to try some of the best craft beer that Alberta has to offer.

Civic Tavern was established in the fall of 2018. Taking the reins from the iconic Hop In Brew, we continued their legacy by serving up amazing Alberta Craft Beer, Cider and Mead and pairing them with fresh, homemade food. Where possible, we source as local as possible and much of our menu is made from scratch.

The Calgary Chinook Fund is an endowment fund established to provide ongoing long-term funding. Each year the fund accrues income and a portion of this income is distributed by the Fund’s advisory committee in support of charitable LGBTQ+ organizations. All donations are deposited with and managed by The Calgary Foundation’s Chinook Fund for Gender and Sexual Diversity.

END OF THE RAINBOW FOUNDATION

We offer peer support groups, supports to settle, and support for refugee hearings in the Calgary area. The Welcoming Spaces Project is based on peer support provided by LGBTQ+ people given to LGBTQ+ people to encourage positive mental health and well being oriented toward improving socio-economic conditions for all. We do this by encouraging everyone in the general public, new and long-time Canadians, to live well together in all of the services that we provide.
